Protect your internet traffic

AVG Secure VPN is a virtual private network that allows users to browse websites and even watch videos wherever they might be, at home or on Wi-Fi. It works across countries, but they have a rather severe 30-day login policy, meaning that users of the VPN are still tracked and identifiable by the VPN itself.

The WireGuard protocol is not yet supported by AVG. NordVPN and Mullvad, on the other hand, do as it can boost internet speed and is the natural successor to OpenVPN as the open-source VPN of choice. It’s not a concern now, but it eventually will.

Is AVG Secure VPN worth it?

AVG VPN has 56 servers spread across 36 countries. It’s far behind the 94 countries supported by ExpressVPN (and a geographically diverse one at that). Although AVG has a limited number of servers, they are spread across a vast number of continents including those in Africa and South America - two regions typically overlooked by VPN providers.

Competing VPN programs tend to have virtual servers that are programmed to appear in any location (except their own physical host). Since AVG has a hardware server designed to house several software-defined servers, so you do not need to worry about that. Their entire network is made up of 700 servers and not one of them uses a virtual location.

Many VPNs boldly speak about providing an encrypted tunnel that protects your information from potential hackers or phishing schemes. This is just part of their operations. Another part is filtering and storing data. AVG Secure VPN is part of Avast - a provider of many cross-platform internet security programs. So while you’re only using, for example, AVG Secure VPN, Avasts’ other programs can see your information too.

Can AVG be trusted?

For their VPNs, AVG and Avast have the same privacy policies. It's simple to read and contains detailed information about the company's data activities. It is worth noting that it does not save your true IP address and does not watch what you do while browsing the internet so they don’t sell your data to corporations or agencies.

AVG does, however, collect some data. It tracks the amount of data you use, documents the IP address of the VPN server you use, and takes notes of a portion of your true IP address. This will enable it to link you to the fastest VPN server for you - which is typically the one nearest to your physical location. You can opt to change this by selecting Change Location.

This will prompt the program to present the complete list of 56 servers. There’s also an option to find a specific location. You can type the country or server you want on the search bar The organization claims that your activities and information it gathers are insufficient to distinguish actual customers as well as deletes them on a 30-day rotating basis.

Falling behind the times

AVG Secure VPN can be a go-to VPN for those that already prefer Avast security programs and require servers that span across the globe. What users need to take note of are its basic security features. Most VPN providers offer encryption and promise a no-log policy, and unlike AVG Secure VPN, do not have a larger company gathering information on its users.

This program is Windows 11 compatible.
